The Dangers of 'Boil & Bite' or 'Stock' Mouthguards
Cheap over-the-counter mouthguards are available from some sports store and pharmacies.
These fall into two categories:
- The stock mouthguard
- The ‘boil & bite’ variety.
Stock mouthguards are supplied in only one shape while 'boil & bite' mouthguards are made of a plastic which is softened in hot water and molded by placing in the mouth. Over-the-counter mouthguards are often ineffective as they do not accurately match the player’s dentition. They are bulky and often cause discomfort or make it difficult for the player to breathe properly.
